Indications of Beard or Facial hair transplant:

Testosterone is the main hormone responsible for facial hair growth. Generally, all men have around the same level of testosterone in their bodies. It’s their reaction to the hormones that dictates the density of facial hair. So men who have thick beards probably react well to the hormone.

Candidates who may want to undergo facial hair transplant may be those who have:

  • - Scars due to trauma, surgical procedure or burns, cleft lip surgery scar
  • - Suffering from traction alopecia leading to loss of hair
  • - Underlying medical conditions like infections
  • - Scarring caused by conditions such as folliculitis
  • - Loss of hair, due to previously conducted transplant surgery

Procedure and Technique of Facial Hair transplant:

Facial hair transplantation is a procedure in which hair from the scalp are transplanted to facial regions to thicken the hair density in beard or mustache areas and give fullness to the beard. Beard transplant involves transplantation of scalp hair to beard region. Men will typically get this procedure to thicken the beard or to cover patchy areas of baldness. Just like typical hair transplant, the newly transplanted hair can be shaved or styled similar to natural hair after some time. Some more examples of transplants of facial hair are goatees, sideburns or mustache transplant.

The technique used for beard transplant is FUE ( Follicular Unit Extraction). In this technique, hair follicles are harvested from the back side or posterior of scalp just like a traditional hair transplant. The new hair grafts are then re-implanted with a specially imported implanter. The entire procedure is done under local anesthesia. Because individual hair follicles are transplanted there is no scarring to worry about and results are of fuller beard.

This is done with utmost care because the doctor has to implant the hair mostly single or double hair graft in the natural direction, angle, and depth so that it normally grows and also take care of aesthetics, such as grey hair, in a natural way. The transplanted hair falls out after a month and new hair starts to grow in around three months time, taking around a year to fully grow in. The transplanted hair result in hair which typically grows just like facial hair with similar texture and characteristics. They can even be shaved or groomed just like a normal beard.

Advantages of Facial Hair transplant:

Facial hair transplant can hide facial scars, recessed or cleft chin, damage done by burns or low-density hair growth due to hereditary factors. This type of transplant is long lasting and transplanted hair will grow naturally in a couple of months, resulting in thicker and fuller beard in patients. The purpose of beard transplant in men can be to enhance their attractiveness or for some, it may be to feel more masculine due to fuller beards.

How many grafts are needed for reconstruction of beard and mustaches?

The number of grafts required can vary but averages are as follows: 300-600 grafts for the mustache, 600-800 grafts for a full goatee, 200-350 grafts for each sideburn, and 800-1000 grafts for a cheek beard.

What is the Recovery period and care after the procedure?

The beard transplant is usually done under local anesthesia and it takes about 2-8 hours depending upon the number of grafts to be transplanted; it is essentially painless, and the recovery is almost immediate. You can resume normal activities and can travel safely immediately after the procedure.

After the procedure, tiny scabs or crusts are formed surrounding the transplanted hair which falls off in 10 days. You can start shaving after 10-14 days. The swelling will subside in a few days on its own. Avoid strenuous exercise for first 5 days. Refrain from direct sun exposure to the face more than 30 minutes. Wearing a hat will provide enough protection.
